#500

We did it, everyone!

On December of 2010 I accepted a challenge to document the wearing of 500 hats. Between then and now, many things have happened. We all noticed how natural a frighteningly enthusiastic expression looks on my face. This project helped me get to know the city of Waterloo, meet new people, embrace patriotism, and gave me something to do when I was bored. It was also 100% the main reason I got a lovely summer job at an upscale hat store. How convenient for me that my 500th hat coincided with my graduation from the University of Waterloo.

I began the challenge as a hopelessly unrealistic 19-year-old undergrad, and I leave it as a 21-year-old about to begin her Masters degree. I really do love how this project brought people together with silliness. It’s still shocking to me how many supporters stuck with me for this outrageous idea - in real life and online. Five hundred thank-yous for caring about me and my ridiculous idea. You guys are the best. I wouldn’t have done it with out you. We did it!

And to answer your burning question: no. I never once contracted lice! A true miracle.

What’s next for fivehundredhats? I actually have a few extra hats that didn’t make the 500 cut, and will be slowly releasing them. An epilogue of sorts.

Thanks for sticking around everyone!

I really like these two beautiful people, and I also really like that they’re getting married this summer. I’m honored to be a part of the wedding party, and thrilled that they let me borrow the ribbon hat at their shower!

Happy Mothers Day to my hero, who after 9 more hats will be able to stop worrying about me getting lice.

"MOTHERS EVERYWHERE WILL UNDERSTAND," she says. "And I love you too."
